Problem Campaign Project Guidelines
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to create a depth of understanding for adolescent
development in contemporary society.
The project will require a four-part application of concepts using: PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION, EXPLANATION, RATIONALE and RESOLUTION for a particular adolescent issue. It will require an understanding of general theoretical concepts, normative and non-normative adolescent development and prevalence of the problem as it occurs within cultural contexts and interactions between biological, psychological and contextual factors. The project includes individual and group work, occurs in 4 parts with feedback to improve upon writing skills creating an iterative, complex and creative learning opportunity to synthesize information.
PART ONE: Problem Identification “The problem with teens these days…”
Purpose of PART ONE: To illustrate a clear indication of the adolescent problem within the contemporary American framework (norms, values, expectations and traditions), in
contrast to other cultures and its implications for developmental outcomes.
This assignment is the first of a series of writing assignments integral to the problem campaign. It will serve as a preliminary assessment of writing skills in preparation for the other papers due later in the semester for this same project with feedback given to improve upon writing skills and evaluation of research. PART ONE GUIDELINES: Identify three main sources for this writing assignment.
1. A statistical report (ex: CDC, American Pediatric Assn), or credible empirical source that supplies current statistics and prevalence of the problem in the U.S.
2. One academic journal article that deals with this particular adolescent problem in American culture.
3. One academic journal article that addresses this particular adolescent problem in another culture.
PARTS OF THE PAPER: Include the following sections, with section headings given below: Introduction: INTRODUCE the reader to the purpose of the paper in 1-2 paragraphs. (3 points) Status of the Problem: SUMMARIZE data to explain the prevalence, incidence and trend of the problem in the U.S. Utilize a succinct essay style format to present as much data and explanation of data as is relevant to illustrate the problem. (5 points) Article #1: EVALUATE the main points in the article and how it is relevant for understanding adolescence and the nature of this problem. STATE that this article pertains to the American culture (and which subculture if mentioned) and any descriptive information it uses to illustrate characteristics of this culture. DESCRIBE characteristics that it offers as explanation and the point that it is making about it. (5 points) Article #2: EVALUATE the main points in the article and how it is relevant for understanding adolescence and the nature of this problem in a different culture. STATE which culture this article pertains to and any descriptive information it uses to illustrate characteristics of this culture. DESCRIBE characteristics that it offers as explanation and the point that it is making about it. (5 points) SYNTHESIS: COMPARE and CONTRAST the problem in American adolescent culture from the other adolescent culture found in the two articles. Include solutions or differences in trends across the cultures. CHOOSE concepts from the summary sheet, textbook or notes and APPLY them to the information found in these articles. (ex: this problem may seem related to a minority culture and the acculturation process in that particular larger culture OR the problem may be related to particular rites of passage that occur in adolescence in that culture). (5 points) CONCLUSION: CONCLUDE with a one paragraph summary that restates the purpose of the paper (using no new information). (2 points) In all writing assignments: You may only use 3rd person (no 1st person: I, me, our, we etc.), typed, double-spaced, APA formatting, APA style reference page, APA in-text citations and academic style paragraphs, language and tone.
